MUSICIAN. ARTIST. GARDENER.

FILM

PRETTY MUCH THE ONLY MOVIE I’VE EVER SEEN THAT I REMEMBER AND LIKED IS STAR WARS. DRACULA THEY TRIED TO MAKE IT TOO MUCH ABOUT TITTIES.

FILM

The Love that Remains, Hlynur Pálmason. A divorced couple raises a family on what I think is Iceland. The lady is an artist and the man is a fisherman. We see a lot of beautiful scenes of their life by the sea, presumably through the eye of the artist’s work, which captures the beauty and severity of the seasons by the sea, and also what is ineffable about a relationship and a family. The movie is surrealistic and poetic but manages to be this way without feeling pretentious or heavy handed. We really enjoyed it in August of 2026. We streamed it on Criterion.

The Naked Island, Kaneto Shindo. 1962.
A couple struggles to farm an island where they have to carry water in buckets from another island in a boat that they have to paddle, and then carry the buckets up a steep hill over and over again. Their two little boys run everywhere and are cool. The scenery is pretty even though the movie is in black and white and I like seeing the color of the ocean in the sunshine. The score is stark and repetitive, but like the movie, beautiful and comforting. Ultimately the movie is sad but it still was really pleasant and nourishing to watch. We watched in on the Criterion subscription platform, and finished it in August of 2026.

PEANUT BUTTER FALCON.
South of the Outer Banks of North Carolina a troubled fisherman and a fugitive young man with Down’s Syndrome are brought together by the lord and go through a Huckleberry Finn style hero’s journey to find love and family. We see beautiful nature scenery brought you by nature and an excellent performance by the two men playing the actors on the raft.
