APRIL 1, 2000 // FORESTVILLE

BODEGA BAY, CALIFORNIA

We drove up from Santa Cruz in the middle of the night. Stephanie drove really fast and aggressive. It was a bit stressful, the travel part was. We had fun in Forestville and on the coast though. She showed us some good spots and her parents made really good food. It was the first time I ever went to that part of the world.

SEPT 1, 1997 // PANAMA

BOCAS DEL TORO, PANAMA We were roughly nineteen years old and crossed the border from Costa Rica to Panama by walking on a bridge over a river. The air was warm and tropical. We took a boat to the island Bocas del Toro where we lived for about a month with a fisherman named Emiliano, and his wife Leighia, who taught us Spanish Lessons. We also got certified in SCUBA diving by a Canadian man named Alexi and his girlfriend Sana who was Danish. The center of our social life was at a bar on the docks called the Blue Ox which is where a man named Ivan cut coconuts with a machete and gave life advice. I liked him. This was a pleasant time in life. I saw a poisonous Sea Snake and ate tuna out of a can and smoked single cigarettes and drank fifty cent Balboa beers and swam across the bay at night in the dark. Michael Lippenholz took most of these photographs.

DEC 7, 1996 // POST SURFING WITH NOBU

TRINIDAD, CALIFORNIA

Nobu and I went surfing somewhere north of Arcata. Probably it was Trinidad. This may have been the day we learned a lesson. Brett Ingles drove the truck and took this photograph.

JULY 1, 1989 // WALKING TO THE BEACH WITH A BROKEN CHAIR

COROLLA, NC

A sullen boy, approximately age thirteen, attempts to walk to the ocean with his sister and cousin. His father video tapes from a deck above.  His grandfather, also on this deck, warns that the beach chair the boy is carrying is faulty, that he should leave it behind. The boy leaves the chair and shuffles toward the sand dune that obscures a view of the Atlantic Ocean.  The sister and cousin are asked gently by the father to wave.  The girls comply.  The grandfather taunts the boy to smile.  It is felt, probably, that he does not.

JULY 1, 1988 // BLACK DOG AND RUSSIAN CHILDREN

HUNT VALLEY, MARYLAND

PORTRAIT OF RUSSIAN CHILDREN AND A BLACK DOG // FAMILY PHOTO ALBUM

A true master took this photo. There is no more telling document of these four family members during this period in time. The dog I still think about, and was a great friend and teacher. The sisters went on to successful lives. The boy turned more and more Russian and wolf.
